How can I find a van for sale to live in?

Updated: May 4, 2023

Most common strategies and resources for finding a van to purchase for conversion.

Finding a van to convert can be an exciting but daunting process. There are many options to choose from, and it can be challenging to find a van that meets your specific needs and budget. However, with some research and diligence, you can find the perfect van for your conversion project. Jump to resources.

Identify the type of van you need

Before you start your search, you need to identify what type of van you want to convert. Will it be a cargo van, passenger van, or a camper van? What size do you need? Will you buy a used van, new van or a van that has already been converted? Consider your budget, your intended use and what features are essential to you. This will help you narrow down your search and focus on the vans, and consequently the types of vendors / sellers that meet your criteria.

Explore vans for sale using online resources

Online classifieds websites are a great place to start your search. Websites like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Autotrader have a section for vans for sale, where you can search for the make and model you're interested in. You can filter the results by location, price range, and other criteria. Make sure to read the listings carefully and contact the seller to ask any questions you may have.

The site, group or app you want to use may depend on your region - for example, there are some van marketplaces/websites that cater specifically to the UK, or some Facebook groups that are narrow to the Northeast US, etc.

Generally, when using free resources, we've found that Facebook Marketplace has the largest collection of vans available - don't just search in the marketplace though, be sure to search for buy/sell groups. Search for key terms like 'camper van for sale' and there are hundreds of groups where people will post their conversion van for sale. These groups can be broad, or as specific as the type of van and region. As an example, one of the biggest / most active groups is 'Class B Camper Vans For Sale' with ~256k members.

Beyond FB there are a ton of other options - check Craigslist, r/vandwellermarketplace and even eBay for your region, along with a few dedicated camper van marketplaces:

  • thevancamper

  • vanlifetrader

  • vanviewer

  • conversiontrader

  • vanlifeadventure

  • RVT

  • RV Trader

There are definitely more than these examples, but this should give you a good start without even leaving the couch.

Check dealerships for vans suitable for conversion

Check with local dealerships that specialize in vans or commercial vehicles. These dealerships often have a selection of new and used cargo and passenger vans that can be converted. Check their inventory online or in-person. Dealerships can offer financing options, warranties, and vehicle history reports that can give you more confidence in your purchase.

Auto auctions often have affordable vans for sale

Local in-person auctions or online auction sites, such as eBay or Copart, can be a great way to find used vans for sale. Many government organizations, or city functions host auto auctions - check with your local government websites for details. Keep in mind that buying a van at an auction can be risky, as you may not have the opportunity to inspect the van beforehand. However, you may be able to find a great deal if you do your due diligence and research the van's history and condition.

Consider looking for vans for sale through rental companies

Some rental companies sell their used fleet vehicles, including cargo vans that may be suitable for conversion. Check out rental companies like Enterprise or U-Haul to see if they have any vans for sale. Rental companies maintain their vehicles regularly, so you may be able to find a well-maintained van that has low mileage.

Explore van conversion companies

Some companies specialize in converting vans and may have pre-owned vans available for sale. These companies may also be able to customize the van to your specific needs. While they may be more expensive than buying a used van elsewhere, they can provide expert advice and assistance with the conversion process.

Attend RV shows

Attend RV shows or van life gatherings to meet other van enthusiasts and see different types of vans for conversion. You may be able to get ideas for your own conversion and meet sellers who have vans for sale. Meeting others in the community may also help to generate ideas for new sources of vans for sale.

Once you find a van that meets your criteria, schedule a test drive and inspection. Make sure to thoroughly inspect the van before purchasing it, including checking for any mechanical issues or damage. If you're not comfortable inspecting the van yourself, hire a mechanic or professional conversion company to do it for you. Consider getting a vehicle history report and asking the seller for maintenance records.

Generally, finding a van for conversion requires research, patience, and diligence. Identify your needs, search online and offline, attend shows, and inspect the van before making a purchase. With some effort, you can find the perfect van for your conversion project and start living your dream of van life.
