Should pipe dope be used in a van build?

Updated: Jun 25, 2023

Pipe dope may be used in a custom van build for a variety of plumbing applications, such as connecting water lines, propane gas lines, or drainage lines. For example, if you are installing a water pump, water heater, or sink in your van, you may need to connect PVC or metal pipes and fittings using pipe dope to create a secure and leak-free seal.

Another example is if you are installing a propane system for heating or cooking, you will need to connect the gas lines with fittings and pipe dope to ensure that there are no leaks. Pipe dope can also be used in the installation of drainage systems or waste tanks, where it is important to ensure that the pipes are sealed properly to avoid any leaks.

The specific use of pipe dope in a custom van build will depend on the design and plumbing requirements of the build. However, wherever there are threaded pipe connections, pipe dope can be a useful tool to ensure a secure and leak-free seal. So in short, the answer is yes, you’ll likely end up using pipe dope in your custom van build.

What is pipe dope?

Pipe dope (thread sealant) is a type of lubricant or sealant that is applied to the threads of pipes and fittings to help create a tight, leak-free seal. It is typically made from a combination of materials, including petroleum-based compounds, synthetic resins, and other additives that help to increase its effectiveness.

Pipe dope is often used in plumbing, heating, and industrial applications, where the sealing of pipes and fittings is critical for safety and efficiency. It is applied to the threads of pipes and fittings before they are joined together, and then the joint is tightened to create a secure seal.

There are different types of pipe dope available, each with their own unique properties and intended applications. Some types are designed for high-temperature applications, while others are better suited for use with certain types of metals or chemicals. It is important to choose the right type of pipe dope for the specific application to ensure a safe and effective seal so make sure you read the back of the label carefully.

When is pipe dope used?

Pipe dope is used to seal the threads of pipes and fittings to prevent leaks and ensure a secure connection. It is commonly used in a variety of applications including plumbing, HVAC, industrial piping, and gas and oil pipelines. Pipe dope can be used on a wide range of materials including metal, plastic, and PVC pipes.

Pipe dope is typically applied to the male threads of the pipe or fitting before it is screwed into the female threads of the connecting piece. The dope fills in any gaps or imperfections in the threads, creating a tight seal and preventing leaks.

Pipe dope is often preferred over other types of sealants, such as Teflon tape or pipe joint compound, because it is more effective at preventing leaks in high-pressure or high-temperature applications, easy to apply and relatively cheap. That said, compounds, tapes and anaerobic sealants all have their benefits and roles so it’s worthwhile looking into each. It’s generally important to select the appropriate type of pipe dope for the specific application and to follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.

How should pipe dope be applied?

Pipe dope is typically applied to the threads of pipes and fittings before they are screwed together. Here are the general steps for applying pipe dope, although it’s pretty straightforward:

  • Clean the threads: Use a wire brush or rag to clean the threads of the pipes and fittings to remove any dirt, debris, or old sealant.

  • Apply the pipe dope: Apply a thin, even layer of pipe dope to the male threads of the pipe or fitting. You can use a brush or your finger to apply the dope. Don’t stress too much about applying too much - if you over-apply, the excess will just squeeze out, so no harm.Make sure you cover the male threads.

  • Assemble the pipes or fittings: Carefully screw the pipes or fittings together, making sure that the threads are properly aligned. Tighten the connection as needed to ensure a secure fit.

  • Wipe away excess dope: After the pipes or fittings are assembled, wipe away any excess pipe dope with a clean rag.

It's important to note that different types of pipe dope may have different application instructions and drying times. Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully for best results. Additionally, it's recommended to wear gloves when applying pipe dope to avoid getting it on your skin, but in reality many people have often limited exposure and are able to simply wash off without issue.

What are some examples of pipe dope that would be available at a major hardware store?

We’re not endorsing any of these, or profiting off of your purchase, but just to give you an idea of what to look for at the store, here are a few different types and brands / options that we see:

RectorSeal T Plus 2: This is a non-hardening, non-separating thread sealant that can be used with water, air, steam, and natural gas applications. It is available in different sizes and can be used with metal or plastic pipes. It’s very commonly used in van builds.

Oatey Great White Pipe Joint Compound: This is a non-hardening, non-separating thread sealant that can be used with metal, PVC, CPVC, and ABS pipes. It is formulated for use in low to medium pressure applications and can be used with potable water. Depending on your need and pipe type, Oatey has a range of compounds / dope available.

Hercules Megaloc Thread Sealant: This is a high-performance thread sealant that is designed for use with high-pressure and high-temperature applications. It can be used with metal, PVC, CPVC, and ABS pipes and is available in different sizes.

PTFE Thread Seal Tape: All hardware stores also carry several brands of PTFE (Teflon) thread seal tape, including RectorSeal and Oatey. This tape is designed for use in low-pressure applications and can be used with most types of pipes and fittings.

These are just a few examples of the pipe dope products that you can find at stores like Home Depot, Lowe’s etc. Of course the most important thing to do is to read the back label of the sealant or pipe dope before buying to make sure it’s going to work well with your need or application.
