What is ‘van life’ and why do people build out conversion vans?

Updated: Jun 25, 2023

The basics of vanlife, and why it's become so popular.

"Van life", ‘van dwelling’ or ‘#vanlife’ refers to a lifestyle or subculture where people choose to live and travel in a van or other types of vehicles such as RVs, buses, or even cars. The van is often modified and equipped with the necessary amenities for daily living, such as a bed, kitchen, and bathroom facilities.

The vanlife movement has gained popularity in recent years as people seek a more minimalistic and adventurous lifestyle. Van life enthusiasts typically travel to various locations, often in search of new experiences and natural beauty, while living and working from their vehicles.

Vanlife can provide a sense of freedom, flexibility, and self-sufficiency for those who choose to embrace this lifestyle. However, it also requires careful planning, preparation, and willingness to adapt to changing circumstances.

Vanlife can mean different things to different people, and people’s rationale for building a van will vary by the individual. For some, it's a way to save money on rent and live a more minimalist lifestyle. For others, it's a way to escape the stresses of modern life and connect with nature, or even chase unlimited adventure. Whatever the reason, van life offers a sense of freedom and adventure that is difficult to replicate in other forms of living.

Another increasingly common reason that people choose van life is the ability to live a simpler and more sustainable lifestyle. Living in a small space means that van lifers are forced to be mindful of their belongings and only keep what they really need. This can help reduce waste and encourage a more eco-friendly way of life.

Finally, vanlife offers a sense of community and connection with like-minded individuals. The vanlife community is a welcoming and supportive one, with many online groups and meetups where van lifers can connect and share tips and experiences. Living in a van can be challenging at times, but having a community of people who understand and can offer support can make all the difference.

Vanlife is a lifestyle that offers freedom, adventure, flexibility, simplicity, cost efficiency and a strong sense of community.

While it may not be for everyone and requires careful planning, preparation and willingness to adapt, for those who are drawn to this way of life, it can be a truly transformative and rewarding experience.
